IT’S NOW OFFICIAL: John Prats is staying with ABS-CBN, his home for the last 17 years.

John admits that there was an offer from GMA-7 for him to move. At first glance, the move would appear to make sense, since it would reunite John with his sister Camille, who is offcially a Kapuso.

But when John and his manager Arnold Vegafria met with ABS-CBN management recently, they were told in no uncertain terms that the network wanted to keep him in their stable, and was prepared to give him projects to ensure that he’d stay.

The first of those projects is slated to premiere this September. It is a month-long episode of Your Song, in which John plays his most mature role yet as a young man who has a one-night stand with an older woman, played by Aiko Melendez.

It is very exciting for John, whose previous roles have been limited mostly to boy-next-door types. In addition to Your Song, John is also slated to play the title role in Tiny Tony, a fantaserye based on a komiks character created by the late Mars Ravelo.

There will be two more superhero series after that, then a new show, Sanlakas — where all the Mars Ravelo superheroes will come together a la Justice League will follow, which John will also be a part of. John was also offered the chance to star in an episode for the long-running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK). Yet another show, the sitcom Parekoy, has been put on hold pending revisions to the script.

John says this package of shows was exactly what he was waiting and hoping for. But it’s not true, he says, that he threatened to leave ABS-CBN if they did not give him shows. “It’s true, there was an offer. I won’t deny that,” he says. “Then we got these offers from ABS-CBN. When we talked to them, they didn’t allow me (to leave), and that’s when we found out about all these shows. Of course, as an actor, my decision and the decision of my manager is based on where my talents and skills can be used.
